Lululemon face disturbing allegations of worker abuse

Low-paid workers producing clothes for Lululemon in Bangladesh say they endured physical abuse and regular humiliation from their managers, according to an investigation by the Guardian. One worker said she was violently slapped for leaving work early on a day when she was sick. Others described managers calling female workers “sluts” or “prostitutes,” as well as instances of physical abuse. A male worker said men at the factory were beaten and mistreated too.

European fashion brands who buy readymade garments from Bangladesh agreed on Tuesday to hand over responsibility for issues like worker safety to a new body called the Readymade Sustainability Council (RSC).

RSC, governed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), and brands and workers’ representatives, will replace the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh to ensure compliance with work-place monitoring in the industry.

Bangladesh's exports in the first month of the current 2019-20 fiscal year ending next June surged 8.55 percent to nearly 4 billion U.S. dollars, an official said Tuesday.

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) official told that export performance for July was 3.88 billion U.S. dollars.

Of the total earnings, he said the country's income from ready-made garment items, including knitwear and woven, stood at 3.31 billion U.S. dollars.

India ranked fifth in the global textile and clothing exports in 2018 though it was in the second position between 2014 and 2017, according to the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry.

Sanjay K. Jain, chairman of the Confederation, has said in a press release that the space vacated by China was largely occupied by the least developed countries, including Vietnam and Bangladesh. India has not been able to tap the opportunities because of its competitive disadvantages and trade barriers in the international markets.

Prices of garment items exported from Bangladesh dipped by 1.61 percent over the last four years, a reflection of the pressure international clothing retailers and brands always put on the garment manufacturers for lowering prices.

If the period between fiscal 2015-16 and 2018-19 are taken into consideration, price per unit of garment items increased only last year by 1.42 percent, according to data from Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
