Falling Indian domestic price gap to boost cotton imports

The continuing contraction in international and domestic cotton prices following higher global production and a decline in domestic output is likely to boost imports further this year, says a report. The gap or spread between global and domestic cotton prices has been on a declining trend owing to higher production in Brazil and China, coupled with a fall in domestic production, says an India Ratings report Tuesday.

Cotton prices were stable on the market on Saturday amidst modest trading. The Karachi Cotton Association kept its spot rate unchanged at Rs8,200.

Cotton experts said a steady trend prevailed in the market as the cotton arrival which is improving with each passing day.

They said the quality of cotton from Sindh is attractive for mill owners. Phutti (seed cotton) from Sindh is priced higher by Rs100 and ranged Rs3,600-4,225 while Punjab variety is pegged at Rs3,550-4,150.

Cotton prices settled higher on Monday as the United States and Mexico, a major importer of US supplies, averted a trade dispute, while investors remained cautious ahead of a crucial monthly crop supply and demand report. Cotton contracts for July settled up 0.4 cent, or 0.61%, at 65.99 cents per lb. It traded within a range of 64.85 and 66.5 cents a lb. The front month contract snapped four straight sessions of losses, after shedding almost 3.7% last week.

Blended yarn prices remain range-bound in Asia

In China, offers for PC yarn were stable in the first week of February while that of PV yarn were firm during the week.

In India, PC yarn offers were assessed unchanged during the week while PV yarn prices also remained range-bound despite rising polyester fibre cost. 30s (65/35) PV warp yarns prices were stable while PC 30s (52/48) prices were up INR1 a kg in Ludhiana.

In Pakistan, poly-cotton prices rolled over on the back of strong prices in raw material market while poly-viscose prices were steady during the week.

Blended yarn price edges down in India, up in Pakistan

In India, PV yarn offers declined in the first week of December while PC yarn prices also edged down. 30s (65/35) PV warp yarns prices fell INR1 a kg while PC 30s (52/48) prices were down INR2 a kg Ludhiana that week.

In Pakistan, poly-cotton prices inched up while poly-viscose prices were stable during the week. Prices increase was limited due to slow domestic and international demand. PC yarn prices were up PakRe1 per pound on the Faisalabad market and 30s were stable on the week. PV 30s yarn prices rolled over during the week.

Blended yarn prices rise in China, stable in India

In China, PC (65/35) 32s yarn prices inched up in the third week of September, while 45s PC combed yarn prices rose US cents 5 a kg on the week. PV 32s were also up US cents 4 a kg. PC yarn prices in China slightly moved up during the week while PV yarn prices were also assessed higher. However, prices could not rise much in US$ terms as the local currency was weak while US$ was stronger this week.

In India, PC yarn prices declined for about 5.6% in the last 5 weeks while PV yarn prices also fell on the week.

Blended yarn prices steady in Asia

In China, PC (65/35) 32s yarn prices were flat in Zhejiang in the last week of June, while 45s PC combed yarn prices were stable on the week. PV 32s were up US cents 2 a kg due to weak US$.

Blended yarn prices mostly rolled over across markets in China, India and Pakistan with fibre prices at firm levels and cotton making some upward move. In China, PV and PC yarn prices were stable in Yuan terms but rose in US$ terms, making export a bit uncompetitive.

Blended yarn prices were relatively steady across China, India and Pakistan with PSF and VSF prices bottoming out in recent weeks. In China, yarn import prices have begun declining due to a sharp drop in cotton futures thus, the difference between domestic and import prices have narrowed down, but still very wide enough to the detriment of yarn importers.

Blended yarn prices in China remained unchanged despite pick up in PSF and VSF prices in recent weeks. A rebound in PSF prices has been encouraging spinners mills to raise offers for PC yarn as spot trade for cotton yarn was shrinking, and prices continuing to fluctuate amid sidelined stance.
