Arvind signs MoU with Guj to set up a mega apparel park

Arvind Limited, one of India’s largest integrated textile and apparel major has signed an MoU with the Gujarat government to set up a mega apparel park with an investment of Rs 300-crore in Dahegam in Ahmedabad district.

The MoU was signed after the state government announced its garments and apparel policy, 2017. The MoU was signed in presence of Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Arvind Limiteds Executive Directors--Kulin Lalbhai and Punit Lalbhai.

The Gujarat government expects to further attract fresh investment of around Rs5000 crore in the textile sectors across the value chain with it's decision to extend textile policy by a year. The extension is expected to add 300 ginning units, to 1,400, and double the spinning capacity to four million a year, apart from setting up of units in other segments, such as technical textiles, silk, jute and wool.

India's first textile university will be set up at Surat for which the Gujarat government will provide funds worth Rs.800 crore - Rs 900 crore. The aim of the university is to provide all kind of support including technology, research and development (R&D), skilled manpower etc.

Purpose of the university will be to create a complete eco system for the textile industry in Gujarat and India. It will guide the government in policy making for the industry. The textile industry will support the government in this endeavour.

Gujarat government to further develop skills in the textile industry, another important industry in Surat after diamonds, is planning to set up a textile university in Surat which would help boost its textile sector.

Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel on Sunday at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of 2,000-acres Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City here announced the setting up a textiles university at the proposed smart city- DREAM City near Surat.

She asked textiles players to seek land in the proposed DREAM-city on the outskirts of the Surat city.

This year Gujarat is expected to produce 1.20 crore bales of cotton. Each year, it exports cotton bales to China as well as other nations. Moreover, owing to bumper produce of cotton in these countries, export of cotton bales has taken a hit.

The Gujarat government on Monday announced relief of R1,100 crore for farmers, including R500 crore relief in electricity bills and R600 crore relief in interest on short-term loan through 50% waiver. Over and above this, the state extended R700 crore assistance to farmers during the ongoing statewide Ravi Krishi Mahotsav.
