A debate has stirred up between the Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Textile Manufacturing Association (NTMA) on the export of cotton from the country.

MTMA’s acting director general Hamman Kwajaffa said at a public hearing organized by a parliamentary committee on industry that it wants a ban on the export of cotton from the country as it is needed for local manufacturing.

Textile raw materials in Nigeria are being sold at prevailing international market prices and payment being demanded in foreign exchange even as the materials are being harvested and produced domestically.

The Federal Government’s efforts at diversifying the economy and reducing dependence on importation are being undermined by value-chain operators, farmers and providers of key raw materials who would rather export raw commodities for foreign exchange than sell to local producers at market prices.

The President of The Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Association (NTMA), Mrs Grace Adereti, urged the Federal Government to establish a cotton corporation in the country in order to boost production of the commodity and revitalize the textile industry. The set up Cotton Corporation would ease textile manufacturer’s access to raw materials for production.

Nigeria has the potential to produce for the local market and also export to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) market of 175 million people, as well as to the developed world but of which various measures have become absolutely necessary to revive the textile industry. At present Nigeria spends over $4 billion, about N1.32 trillion, yearly on imported textile and other ready-made clothings.

The Director General of Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Association (NTMA), Hamma Kwajaffa disclosed this yesterday in Abuja despite government intention in recent time to revive the textile sector, the reality on ground continues to be worrisome as Nigeria currently spends over $4 billion annually importing textiles and readymade clothing.

Textiles used to be Nigeria’s foremost industry, and the second largest employer after government and utilizing indigenous raw materials such as cotton in the past.
