Cotton production in Pakistan showing 7 pc increase in volume

The Pakistan's cotton arrival trends during last fortnight, showing above the market expectations, at least 422,738 cotton bales of 160 kilograms each reached ginning factories during the last fortnight, as per the industry data showed on Wednesday.

According to a consolidated statement of cotton arrivals in factories around the country till January 1, total cotton arrival at ginning stage has so far reached at 11.108 million bales, a seven percent increase in volume compared with the same period a year ago.

Karachi Cotton Exchange on Monday witnessed active trading, while spot rate remained firm at Rs6,350/maund (37.324 kg) and Rs6,802/40-kg. Ex-Karachi rates also remained firm Rs6,485/maund and Rs6,950/40-kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

Karachi Cotton Market recorded nine transactions of around 6,000 bales of the new crop at a price of Rs6,350 to Rs6,700 a maund.

According to an analyst, there was more demand after rains stopped in Sindh. Around 65 ginning factories have started operation in Sindh and 10 in Punjab.

At the Karachi Cotton Exchange, normal trading activity was witnessed on Wednesday, while spot rates increased Rs50/maund to Rs6,200/maund (37.324kg) and Rs6,645/40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also increased to Rs6,335/maund and Rs6,790/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

KCE recorded seven transactions changed hands of around 5,000 bales from Sindh at a price of Rs6,350/maund to Rs6,400/maund. Deals were noted from Hyderabad, Tando Adam, Kotri, Sanghar, Shahdadpur, Mirpurkhas and Sinjoro.

Demonetization has affected cotton arrivals in the market as farmers are not bringing cotton to the mandis due to widespread prevalence of cash payments. . There has been a 30 percent drop in arrivals, said Atul P Asher, secretary, Indian Cotton Federation (ICF). Business has come down and only 10% of the ginning factories are operating.

Ginneries across Pakistan as of December 1st have received seed cotton (phutti) equivalent to over 86,31,933 bacles of cotton which shows a decrease of 28.93 percent compared to corresponding period last year when ginneries received 1,21,45,705 bales according to the 7th fortnightly report of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) issued on figures of cotton arrival up to December 1st, 2015 on Thursday.

Cotton market is facing declining trend with the arrivals of new crop (August 2015 / July 2016), The lint cotton prices have dropped by Rs350 to 400 per maund (37.32 kgs) while seedcotton prices have red a declined by Rs 500 to Rs 600 per 40 Kilogrammes. The new crop seedcotton prices are presently said to be ruling from Rs 2300 to Rs 2500 per 40 Kgs, according to the quality. In the Punjab, seedcotton prices from the new crop said to range from Rs 2500 to Rs 2600 per 40 kilogrammes.

The Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) at the meeting held on Monday assessed cotton crop size for the season 2014-15 at 13.4885 million bales. They have agreed to maintain the cotton crop size for 2014-15 in Punjab at 9.902m bales, Sindh at 3.48m bales, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 0.0015m bales and Balochistan at 0.1070m bales, respectively.

Cotton Commissioner Dr Khalid Abdullah informed the meeting about cotton crop condition and status of cotton arrival position in ginning factories. The major obstacles in achieving cotton production targest were climate and seed quality issues.

This year the cotton arrival in Pakistan market has shown an increase of 4.73 percent. Around 2,750,563 cotton bales were sourced to the country's ginners by September 15th, according to Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) fortnightly report.
