Bangladeshi state-owned jute mills faces sharp decline in export of jute goods

The State-owned jute mills of Khulna-Jessore industrial belt in Bangladesh has witnessed sharp decline in jute goods exports due to lack of demand in global market, particularly because of political instability in major importing countries.

The Jute mills registered 38.65 percent decline in export of jute goods in the just concluded fiscal compared to its preceding fiscal.

Pakistan has not yet granted the most favoured nation (MFN) status to India while India granted the status way back in 1996. With Pakistan granting the MFN status to India, it will open new clear direct trade between the two countries and also help in reducing transactions cost.
 
According to Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, with the grant of MFN status the trade would then take place bilaterally at significantly lower cost. It will also restore Pakistan's international commitment under WTO of reciprocity to MFN status.
 

Firm price trend was seen on cotton market

Prices on the cotton market remained firm in the process of meek trading as mills and spinners kept on the sidelines ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. The official spot rate held the overnight level at Rs 5800. The prices of seed cotton in Sindh and Punjab stayed unchanged at Rs 2800-2900.
 
The mills were not taking interest in purchasing of cotton due to quality factor, the fall in the business activity is attributed to ginners' attitude toward new deals as most of them were not in favour of deals at the present levels.

This season with Punjab managing to sow cotton on 5.67 million acres of land that is more than 227,000 acres from last year is now looking ahead to getting closer to 10 million cotton bales out of it.
 
Of the total area, 13 per cent was sown what is termed as early crop. The rest 87 per cent was sown after May 15 – regular sowing period for the crop.
 

Govt decides export target of $45 bn for textile products same as last year

The Ministry of Textiles has fixed an export target of USD 45 billion for textile products for the current year 2014-15, after discussion with the Industry. In fact, there is absolutely no change done in the target from last year’s, which was set at USD 45 billion for textile product.
 
The set target was informed by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Friday.

Some hectic buying was witnessed on the cotton market from spinning mill owners ahead of Eidul Fitr holidays due to which there was some improvement seen in trading activity on Thursday.

Phutti arrivals could not improve as growers were reluctant to sell their produce at lower prices, but there were some weaker links among them trying to sell at prevailing low rates to meet their Eid-related expenses.
 
Deals were finalised at Rs5,850 and Rs6,000 in Punjab and Rs5,800 and Rs5,950 in Sindh.
