The trade show opens lucrative opportunities for the weavers, some of whom have been contracted to supply materials to prominent fashion designers, bag manufacturers, and gift and novelty shops. Beatriz Accessories -Members of the younger generation are also enticed to stay and engage in the old tradition of weaving. Finally, a cultural heritage is saved from extinction and the economies of these communities are given a tremendous boost. The event is sponsored by the Ayala Group and Philippine Airlines.

HABI, the Philippine Textile Council, opens its annual Likhang Habi Market Fair featuring products made from traditional Philippine textiles at the Glorietta 2 Activity Center in Makati. The fair will run from Oct. 23 to 25.

HABI, the Philippine Textile Council formed in 2009 to promote and develop hand-woven traditional textiles, took the forefront in reviving Philippine indigenous fabrics through the annual Likhang Habi Market Fair. The three-day bazaar will highlight, handwoven textiles made from 100-percent Philippine-grown cotton.

Habi the Philippines Textile Council became an independent organization of its own since its 2009 partnership with the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, centers its mission on sustaining traditional textiles through research and education.

Weaving in the Philippines has a history that goes back to prehistory. It has a meager existence in today’s world, where the majority of Philippine textile products are made or sourced abroad, and the communities who carried out hand-weaving traditions due to poverty watch their cultural traditions fade.
