Turkmenistan seek foreign investment to further expand its textile industry

Turkmenistan over the years of independence has seen increase in cotton fiber processing from 3 percent to 51 percent. Also the country’s cotton yarn production has increased 2.4 times from 2000 to 2015 and cotton production 4 times.

The country aims to raise foreign investment to bring further expansion in its textile industry for which they intend to create the most favorable conditions for investors and also introduce, new technologies.

At present, Turkmenistan has more than 70 enterprises producing cotton yarn, cotton, terry, denim, knitted fabrics and knitwear

Russia and Turkmenistan discussed possibilities of selling Turkmenistan’s textile and cotton products on the Russian market during a meeting at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Russian side was represented by Alexander Rybakov, vice president of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The delegation of Turkmenistan included Berdymurad Redzhepov, Turkmen’s ambassador to Russia as well as representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Textile Industry. The meeting was also attended by heads of various textile enterprises from the two countries

Cotton is a major source of the country's export, and it is the raw material for dozens of modern enterprises of the dynamically developing Turkmenistan's textile industry. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov at the governmental meeting expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the agricultural work, primarily cotton harvesting.

He demanded the necessary organizational arrangements be made in order to ensure that the regions fulfill their commitments on delivering raw cotton.

Turkmenistan plans to harvest 1.5 mn tons cotton this season

In Turkmenistan cotton is grown in 5 regions (velayats): Ahal, Mary, Lebap, Dashoguz and Balkan. The acreage under cotton crop is 545 000 ha that is harvested from the August through October. According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan, they plan to procure 1.5 million tons of raw cotton this season.
 
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a meeting with the level of heads of regional administrations of the country to discuss the issue related to cotton harvest.
