Tirupur exports of readymade garments has almost touched Rs 21,000 crore in 2014-15, witnessing 17 percent growth over last year. With Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) expected in September, exports from Tirupur, the knitwear hub is likely to grow by 20 to 50 percent in a few years, said an exporters' association functionary.

The Board may function under the chairmanship of Chief Minister or Minister for Textiles where the Textile Secretary could be the co-ordinator.

Tirupur knitwear industry a Rs18,000 crore industry which mostly comprising small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Tirupur exporters to boost the reach of their products in the US market have joined hands with America's Bradley University to develop a business plan.

The strategy was developed by Rajesh Iyer, an associate professor of marketing and director of the international business programme at Foster College of Business, Bradley University, Illinois, and his Executive MBA students.

Garment exporters in Tirupur currently dominated by cotton garments are seeing opportunity in synthetic garments, as labour costs are increasing in China, which dominate the global synthetic garment business.

According to Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA), garment exporters are in the process of tapping synthetic and blended garment segments in a big way, which constitute about 70 percent of global demand.
