Azerbaijan cotton production faces pressure

Cotton or white gold once a very productive industry in Azerbaijan is now suffering slow down. Over the past 18 years, production has dipped six fold in the country. Moreover, the amount of land allocated to growing cotton has fallen nine fold.

This year in Azerbaijan, more than 14,000 tons of cotton were collected in January-September while last year, the country produced 41,000 tons of cotton. However, fifteen years ago, cotton production was at 91,500 tons.

Zimbabwe cotton also known as the white gold had economically uplifted places such as the hot and semi-arid marginalized areas like Gokwe in the Midlands Province. Besides bringing in the much needed foreign currency, the textile, oil-pressing and stock feed industries also benefitted from cotton production in Zimbabwe. But today, the nation cannot talk of a 2015 cotton crop because there is no cotton crop to talk about.

The international conference on resource efficiency on Thursday called for new legislation to stop the use of restricted/non-approved chemicals and dyes in the textile industry, as it has been observed that many textile industry units in different processes make unnecessary use and waste a lot chemicals and dyes which create serious environment and health problems along with adding to the cost of production.
