Africa’s top cotton grower Burkina Faso to see surge in cotton output by as much as 20 percent in the 2017-18 season to 820,00 metric tons, an industry official in Burkina Faso said.

The target is realistic and achievable if rains are favorable and well distributed over the season and if parasites are kept under control, Georges Yameogo, general secretary of the nation’s cotton association said.

The price for the new season was set at 245 CFA Francs ($0.40) a kilogram up from 235 Francs the previous season. The costs of fertilizers, insecticides and seeds remain unchanged.

Burkina Faso a landlocked country in West Africa in the recently ended 2015/16 season produced 581,000 tonnes of raw cotton, however down 18 percent from the previous harvest and well short of its aim of a record crop of 800,000 tonnes, said the national cotton association on Friday.

The Cotton-4 (C-4), the main four cotton producing countries Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali (C4) in Africa, which account for about 40 percent of the continent’s raw cotton output. have raised concerns over subsidies and trade policies after the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) said in its 2014-15 outlook that world cotton trade could shrink significantly this year and probably in years to come.

African countries have gone to WTO to seek information about trade policies; India’s cotton subsidies under scanner.
