Indonesia benefiting less from the partnership to ask Japan for review

Indonesia to expand bilateral ties with the East Asian nation plans to urge Japan to review the economic partnership agreement. The Indonesia-Japan economic partnership agreement (IJ-EPA) was implemented by both countries since 2008 and after a five-year period, both parties have been given the chance to re-evaluate the execution.

Indonesia claims it has benefited less than expected from the partnership and has requested a review several times, including the latest effort made during the term of former trade minister Muhammad Lutfi.

Cotton growers of Vidarbha likely to face another year of recession as China to curb import

Chinese demand is an important factor for determining market prices of raw cotton and lint. Due to a fall in Chinese demand, cotton prices have touched the minimum support price of Rs4050 a quintal in India, bringing tough times for Vidarbha farmers.

According to the trade representatives attending the Textile Association-India (TAI) conference in Nagpur, Vidarbha cotton growers likely to face another year of recession as China, the major consumer of Indian cotton, plans to keep imports of the commodity under control.

Pham Chi Lan, a renowned economist warned the local authorities that they should think of restricting the number of textile and garment projects. If there are too many projects in the field and the investors do not fulfill the commitments on environmental protection, a heavy burden will be put on local authorities’ and local residents’ shoulders.

Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2015 witnessed low number of visitors putting the traders in dire straits. This year the inflow of visitors into the fair came down to over 70 percent due to the nationwide blockade coupled with strikes.

The participants said sales and orders had dropped by around 70 per cent this year comparing to that of last year for a low turnout of visitors.

Most of the participants expressed their utter frustration on Friday as their sales and orders from consumers fell short of expectations, resulting in huge losses every day.

Cotton production of Kenya stood at approximately 30,000 bales in 2014 an increase from 2013, when production stood at 22,000 bales due to the effects of drought, was informed Agriculture Fisheries and Food Authority (AFFA) Interim Head of Fibre Crops Directorate Anthony Muriithi in Nairobi on Wednesday.

The Textile Ministry of Pakistan has called stakeholder for another meeting on Monday in order to have consultation with them on the textile policy. Ministry would be presenting the main points of their drafted policy to the members and members would have a chance to present their point of view on any given matter.

According to APTMA officials, the stakeholders are expected to discuss various issues relating to energy, product diversification, encouraging investment, trainings and improved factory floor management.
