FICCI welcomes measures taken by the government to address the issues of the textile industry

Mr. Jaipuria expressed that garment and carpet industry was under immense pressure after implementation of GST. After GST, substantial drop in import duty was observed which has encouraged cheaper imports. It is also worth noting that total imports of textiles and garments increased in 2017-18 (USD 7 billion) by 16% in comparison to 2016-17 (USD 6 billion).

Vietnam International Fashion Fair 2016, a six day event co organized by Co-organised by Vietnam Exhibition and Fair Centre JSC (VEFAC) and Vietnam Textile and Garment Group, opened its doors on 21st December where more than 150 enterprises are showcasing their products.

The event is hosting over 200 booths covering 4,000sq.m. On display are textiles and garments, footwear, cosmetics, jewellery and beauty services.

The final negotiation between Vietnam and the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan on their free trade agreement (FTA) concluded last month is expected to sign the agreement early this year granting Vietnam preferential export tariffs on textiles and garments, agricultural produce, seafood, footwear and furniture. With the effect of FTA, many of those products are expected to enjoy zero-percent tariffs.

Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2015 witnessed low number of visitors putting the traders in dire straits. This year the inflow of visitors into the fair came down to over 70 percent due to the nationwide blockade coupled with strikes.

The participants said sales and orders had dropped by around 70 per cent this year comparing to that of last year for a low turnout of visitors.

Most of the participants expressed their utter frustration on Friday as their sales and orders from consumers fell short of expectations, resulting in huge losses every day.

Vietnam raked in $28.5 billion from exports to the U.S. in 2014, up 19.6 percent compared with 2013, according to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO). In particular, the fastest growth rate was seen in such groups as textiles and garments (13.9 percent), footwear (26.1 percent), wood and wooden products (12.8 percent), and electronics, computers and components (45 percent).

Vietnam-India bilateral trade turnover surpass $5b target

The Vietnam-India bilateral trade turnover in the first 11 months of the year reached US$5.15 billion, posting an 8.37 per cent year-on-year increase. The two-way turnover has increased by an average 16 percent each year since 2009, making the two countries became important trade partners.

During Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's official visit to India in October, the two countries agreed to take measures to promote bilateral trade to reach a turnover target of $7 billion in 2018, and $15 billion by 2020.

Cabinet give positive signal for modification in labour law

The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved amendments to three outmoded labour laws that is the Factories Act 1948, the Apprenticeship Act 1961 and Labour Laws which exempted from furnishing returns and maintaining of registers by certain establishments 1988, that acted as an obstacle to faster growth and hurt employee interests.
 
This is the first step and is perhaps the biggest reforms in nearly 44 years. It is a huge step and gives positive signal about the government’s intention to attract investment.
