PolyU, Wuyi University sign agreement for green textiles

PolyU, or the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is all set to endorse and promote green and healthy textiles and in its endeavour to make this happen, it has signed a collaborative agreement with Wuyi University, China.

The agreement distinctly states that both PolyU and the Chinese university will invest significantly in the research and development of green and healthy textiles for a period extending up to 3 years.

ZFU urges the goverment to pay in USD

The Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) is appealing to the government to peg cotton prices in United States dollars in order to cushion farmers against the reduction in RTGS dollar value.

Cotton prices have remained unchanged since the start of the selling season in May.

ZFU president, Paul Zakariya said cotton should be pegged in US dollars so that farmers are paid at the prevailing interbank market rate since RTGS$1.95/kg has become unsustainable.

People are buying more clothing today than they did 15 years ago.

But they’re only wearing it half as long.

That means clothing production and sales are both on the rise, and so is the amount of clothing in landfills.

In such a climate, “fast-fashion” companies, like Forever 21 and Zaful, are growing, said Karen Leonas, a professor in the Wilson College of Textiles at N.C. State University. And thrift stores and secondhand clothing sales are growing even faster, at 24 times the rate of other retail.

China cotton association to request waiver from import tariffs on U.S

The China Cotton Association will submit an application on behalf of its members for a waiver on import duties on uncombed cotton from the United States, according to a statement on its website on Thursday.

The Ministry of Finance posted a list of goods, including cotton that has not been carded or combed, at the end of May that could be eligible for waivers on tariffs that China imposed in July on U.S. goods as part of the China-U.S. trade war.

Waiver applications need to be submitted by July 5.

The sizeable Milliken & Company is about to get bigger.

The diversified textile manufacturer has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Polartec, a global brand that develops performance textiles for outdoor and military apparel, from Versa Capital Management.

The acquisition is expected to close this month. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
