Cotton futures going down

Related Keywords: China, cotton, fiber, financial markets, future, liquidation, loss, Mills, Textile, trading

Cotton futures fell on Tuesday, as mills held off buying following a short-lived rally during the previous session and investor liquidation and a stronger U.S. dollar pressured prices.

The most-active December cotton contract on ICE Futures U.S. edged down 0.82 cent, or 1 percent, to settle at 84.72 cents a lb.

A lack of buying from global textile mills and long liquidation from investors pushed cotton prices to the day’s losses, after they climbed 1.8 percent during the previous session as investors renewed investment in riskier assets at the start of the quarter.

The fashion bizz gets a tough enough time (and rightly so) for being one of the world’s most-polluting industries. Add in the fact that the most prevalent material in our clothes is also one of the worst culprits in polluting the planet and you can see why cotton is currently public enemy #1.

But why is the fluffy cotton crop so bad for the planet? And what can we do about it? GLAMOUR spoke to Charlotte Turner, Head of Sustainable Fashion & Textiles at sustainability and communications consultancy Eco-Age to get the low-down.

Although Nike has recalled its “Betsy Ross” American flag sneakers, shoppers looking for flag-adorned clothing in stores will have plenty of other options, even though the popular trend is technically illegal.

Nike had intended to release a pair of Air Max 1 Quick Strike sneakers for the Fourth of July that featured a 13-star flag, commonly linked to Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, but said Tuesday it halted distribution ”... based on concerns that it could unintentionally offend and detract from the nation’s patriotic holiday.”

Kelly Davis has started doing something she once considered unthinkable: buying clothes at Costco.

The 31-year-old had long resisted the warehouse chain’s clothing aisle; it just felt weird buying dresses and shirts at the same place she bought groceries. Plus, she said, “It’s where my mom shops."

But eventually, a pair of Jessica Simpson jeans — light blue, distressed, with holes — for only $13 did her in.

“Costco has really stepped up its game,” said Davis, who lives near Dallas. “The clothes are actually stylish. It’s not just old mom stuff anymore.”
