Pakistan ginneries receives around 25.68 pc cotton bales short as of Oct 1

Pakistani ginneries across Pakistan have received seed cotton (Phutti) equivalent to over 30,73,325 bales as of October 1, showing a decrease of 25.68 percent compared to corresponding period last year when ginneries received 41,35,096 bales, according to figures issued by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

According to the third fortnightly report of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) issued on Sunday, out of the total arrivals, 3.07 million bales of cotton have been converted into bales so far.

Seed cotton (Phutti) equivalent to over 1,339,990 bales of cotton have reached ginneries across Pakistan as of September 1 showing 23.96 percent decline compared to corresponding period last year when ginneries received 1,762,282 bales, according to figures of cotton arrival up to September 1 issued by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

Textile mills in the southern region for the last six months are hit due to the market slowing down for yarn and prices remaining low, compared to the production cost. Further, textile units in the State also had to pay higher value added tax (five percent) compared to central sales tax (two percent) according to the South India Spinners’ Association.

Yarn made in other States and sold here was priced lower than the yarn made by the mills in the Tamil Nadu State.

SIMA wants CCI to start offloading cotton stock to help textile mills

As the textile mills of the South Indian region are running short of quality cotton, the textile industry has requested the textile minister to direct Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to offload cotton in the market who in order to safeguard the interest of the farmers had procured 86 lakh bales of cotton under minimum support price (MSP) operations.

Due to fall in cotton prices, CCI procured bales of cotton mainly from Andhra Pradesh and Telengana but it has only offloaded 3 lakh bales of cotton and is holding the balance of 83 lakh bales, the south Indian textile industry claimed.

At a meeting organized on the TUFS by the Southern India Mills’ Association in Coimbatore on Monday, Textile Commissioner Kiran Soni Gupta said that the Ministry was looking at balanced growth of different segments of the textile and clothing sector and if there were modifications that were needed in the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS), the stakeholders should review the scheme and submit their suggestions. These could be taken up at the end of the XII Plan period.

The Textile and clothing sector has around eight schedule employment (under the Minimum Wages Act) such as cotton ginning, pressing and waste cotton industry, handloom and weaving industry, handloom silk weaving industry, hosiery manufactory, powerloom industry, silk twisting industry, tailoring industry and apprentices in textile mills.

Besides this, there are many industrial establishments engaged in the manufacture of knitted and woven garments and made-ups (home furnishings). Some of them cater to both – the domestic and export markets.
