Indonesia look to enhance trade relations with India for textile machinery

In order to maintain the competitiveness of the country’s textile and textile products (TPT) in the global market, the Indonesian Textile Association (API) has requested the local players in the industry to regularly upgrade their production facilities.

Most of the textile makers in the country presently are relied on old textile machineries and were getting more reluctant to invest more in the backdrop of weakening global demand, said API chairman, Ade Sudrajat.

The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, plans to have a series of programmes on Good and Service Tax (GST) so that entrepreneurs in each sector will know in details about its impact on their business with the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passing the GST Bill and the country at the cusp of a major tax reform, industries are gearing up for the change.

Textile Industrial associations are inviting experts to speak to their members on the impact of GST on the respective sectors.

CCI to start e-sale of cotton stocks directly to MSMS textile mills

With cotton prices shooting up, the Textile Ministry to keep prices under check has directed the Cotton Corporation of India to sell cotton purchased by it. CCI will start e-sale of cotton stock with it to to micro, small and medium-scale (MSMS) textile mills in a couple of days directly at minimum support price, according to the official.

Following a sharp decline in output estimates for the current crop year, prices of cotton have recorded over 5 percent gain after bottoming out on March 23. Non-availability of good quality cotton has also supported the move immensely.

Traders are estimating cotton output to decline further to 31 million bales (170 kg each). Some go down further with the fibre output forecast at 30 million bales for the current season.

In a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) held on December 31, 2015, Finance Secretary Waqar Masood Khan commented that decline in the export of cotton cloth despite enjoying cheaper electricity and gas was not justifiable and called for investigating the matter in order to determine the actual consumption of cotton yarn by the textile mills.

Finance Minister and ECC Chairman Ishaq Dar also suggested further analysis of the data to find out the actual reasons and factors responsible for the drop in exports.

The price of cotton generally shoots up when the industry needs cotton and when the arrivals have come down in the market. But this year, just two months since new cotton season began and the prices of cotton have already gone up though arrivals continue to be high in the market.

This situation has driven as many as 43 textile mills in the State have come together and plan to import cotton from West African countries, depending on the requirement.

The Pakistan government has so far revised down its crop estimate almost by 30 percent this year from an initial target of 15.4 million bales set in February. Local cotton demand is estimated at 15.5 million bales this year. The latest estimate suggests the crop size will not exceed 10.8 million bales (of 170 kilogram) from 11.4 million bales forecasted last month. The Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC), in a meeting held earlier this week, sees additional shortfall of 600,000 bales this crop season.

Ginneries across Pakistan as of December 1st have received seed cotton (phutti) equivalent to over 86,31,933 bacles of cotton which shows a decrease of 28.93 percent compared to corresponding period last year when ginneries received 1,21,45,705 bales according to the 7th fortnightly report of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) issued on figures of cotton arrival up to December 1st, 2015 on Thursday.

In Pakistan, the textile spinning mills had shut down the production on Wednesday to protest against government anti-industry policies which increased the cost of doing business in Pakistan.

The recent hike in power tariff and gas infrastructure development cess (GIDC) add around Rs 170 billion to the cost of doing business every year, said Tariq Saud, chairman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA).

He said that this strike was successful which also included leading groups in spinning sector, right from Karachi to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
