Unexpected rains have firmed up cotton prices

Delay in harvest of the fibre crop in the key growing regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana and other States due to unexpected rains have firmed up cotton prices over the past few days. According to Biren Vakil, an analyst with Ahmedabad-based Paradigm Commodities, the price rise is a temporary phenomenon. They may see some downward movement in prices after November. But till then, some more upside can be seen.

Indian Texpreneurs Federation urged Tamil Nadu State government to come out with a three year textile policy at the earliest to support the textile industry. States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana having textile policies, textile investments are coming up in these States.

The association members plan to meet the Chief Minister, ministers concerned, and the elected representatives and highlight the plight of the textile industry in the State and the need for a textile policy.

In Maharashtra, cotton ginners are expecting a good season ahead, though cotton arrivals are likely to be delayed by a fortnight because of incessant rains in the Marathwada region.

Inspite of heavy rains in the Marathwada region, the crop should not be affected and perhaps for the first time, and Maharashtra may overtake Gujarat in terms of production at about 1 crore bales. Usually, Maharashtra produces around 60-70 lakh bales and around 20 lakh bales are sold to Gujarat. But this time, there could be a bumper production because of the good rains.

Under the Central government’s venture capital funds financial assistance scheme for Scheduled Caste entrepreneurs, Maharashtra has emerged as the top destination for funds sanction.

Of the Rs 150.45 crore sanctioned so far, Maharashtra accounts for Rs 37.6 crore. The state also leads in the number of companies (12) that have received sanctions for this fund so far.

For instance, Yash Cotton Yarn Pvt Ltd has been sanctioned Rs 9.8 crore to set up a spinning mill in Akola.

The Telangana government is formulating a new textile policy which will include incentives that match with those given by states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu to attract new industries. The new policy will be in line with the national policy.

The state government has decided to set up a mega textile park in Warangal, the largest cotton growing districts in the state and has sought clearances from the Centre for the conversion of forest land for it.

FIASWI urges for hike in import duty on Chinese fabric

The Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry expressing concerns over the dwindling in demand of man-made fabric (MMF) manufactured in Surat, Maharashtra and other parts of the country due to the huge increase in import of MMF fabric in 2013-14 from China, Taiwan and South Korea.

FIASWI has urged for hike in import duty on fabric from 10% to 30% to discourage Chinese manufacturers.
