Textile industry facing shortage of labour particularly skilled

The textile industry in and around Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur and part of Bengaluru was facing shortage of labour, particularly skilled workers, which at any given time requires three lakh to five lakh workers, a board member of Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) Srihari Balakrishnan said.

He was speaking at a function organized to distribute certificates and appointment orders in ITF member mills trained under Skill Development Programme.

A Sakthivel, President of Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) announced that the Apparel, Made-Ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) launched jointed by the Ministry of Textiles, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the Apparel Export Promotion Council has become fully operational.

It is crucial to determine the quality of training to ensure success of the skill development programme. Skill assessment therefore has become an essential part of skill development,” Sakthivel said.

Tamil Nadu, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of the country's handloom textiles production and 50 per cent of exports, has over six lakh handloom units and 1,400 cooperative societies. As part of Integrated Skill Development Programme, Tamil Nadu minister for Handloom Gokula Indira has announced that around 1600 persons in the state would be given training in weaving and skill development.

The first phase training programme to 40 weavers at the Intensive Handloom Project centre has been inaugurated.
