Pakistan seeks more Chinese investment

Prime Minister Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood has underlined the significance of investment opportunities in the textile sector for industrial development.

In a meeting with a Chinese delegation of the National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) on Tuesday, he urged the delegation to extend its cooperation in the textile sector. The two sides discussed bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

Kelly Davis has started doing something she once considered unthinkable: buying clothes at Costco.

The 31-year-old had long resisted the warehouse chain’s clothing aisle; it just felt weird buying dresses and shirts at the same place she bought groceries. Plus, she said, “It’s where my mom shops."

But eventually, a pair of Jessica Simpson jeans — light blue, distressed, with holes — for only $13 did her in.

“Costco has really stepped up its game,” said Davis, who lives near Dallas. “The clothes are actually stylish. It’s not just old mom stuff anymore.”

India feels the adverse social and environmental impact of ‘fast fashion’; however, this may change soon.

India is a global manufacturing hub for textiles and apparel, coping with growing international and domestic demand. The global textiles market is projected to reach $1.3 trillion by 2025. Similarly, the domestic market for apparel is estimated to reach $59.3 billion by 2022 and that for textiles to grow to $223 billion by 2021. The industry is also critical in terms of income and employment generation, contributing to 5 percent of India’s current GDP.

Amazon.com Inc has expended plenty of effort to become your go-to place to buy clothes, and it is clearly making inroads. In particular, it appears to be scoring in the category of basics such as undershirts and socks.

But the site still isn’t a great shopping experience for more fashion-oriented purchases — and it will need to be if it is to lure more marquee apparel brands and increase its market share.

Apparel Export Promotion Council sets up a buyer-seller meet in Spain

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) will hold its annual buyer-seller meet in Madrid, Spain, on October 9 and 10 hoping to raise apparel exports from India to that country.

"We have been receiving good responses to the buyer-seller meets, which we have been organizing in Spain since 2008,” AEPC deputy director C Eswarasundar said in a statement.

The diversified textile manufacturer has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Polartec, a global brand that develops performance textiles for outdoor and military apparel, from Versa Capital Management.

The acquisition is expected to close this month. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Teijin Frontier, the Teijin Group’s fibres and products converting company, has developed a new cotton-like high-performance polyester material for athleisure fashion.

The new material has been developed to combine the look and texture of cotton with superior properties for moisture absorption, quick drying and UV protection. Notably, the cotton-like features are achieved with polyester filament yarn, not a staple fibre. What’s more, Teijin Frontier’s new material is eco-friendly because it is made with recycled raw materials.
