Domestic polyester fibre and yarn manufacturers give a sigh of relief due to the government's decision to raise customs duty on their import to encourage Indian producers

Filatex plans to increase its production capacity by nearly 90,000 tonnes to 237,000 tonnes for FY 2018-19. A similar capacity expansion was planned by other polyester manufacturers as well. Polyester prices have moved in a narrow range over the last few months following crude oil prices. Data compiled by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) showed $1.6 billion worth of man-made filaments and man-made staple fibre products imported into India during the financial year 2017-18.

The textile products, including yarn, fibre, fabric, and home textile, imported by the European Union countries from all over the world in 2017 increased by 3%, compared to the previous year, and amounted to EUR 18.3 billion. Over EUR 1 billion worth of textiles were imported from four countries. The share of these four countries in imports constituted 61.3%.

The industry had seen reduction in downside and ROSL by over 5 % of FOB since the pre-GST period. Also, Indian textile and clothing exporters did not have better access in countries markets such as the European Union which countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam had. These had an impact on the exports. Though annual apparel exports are at 17 billion $ now, the industry is confident of 20 % growth this financial year if there a level-playing field.

The approved investments will be in the form of equipment that will affect all of the processes — polycondensation, spinning and textile processing — at the Guben site where Trevira produces filament specialties for the textile industry. A total sum of approx. 7.5 million euros is scheduled to be invested. These investments will generate additional quantitative growth and optimize processes and procedures at Trevira’s site in Guben where flat and texturized filament yarns are produced for automotive interiors, technical textiles, apparel, and home textiles.
