Nylon filament yarn (NFY) prices were down in June 2019 due to insipid demand and increased supply. The average run rate in nylon yarn market was stable at 70%, as a few suppliers cut their run rates. In China, semi-dull FDY70D/24F prices fell US cents 24 a kg from previous month while FDY40D were down US cents 26 a kg.

Cotton futures’ uptrend slowed down in the week ended 5th July 2019 amid expectations of massive production in the coming season, largely in India. Meanwhile, Brazil substituted US cotton suppliers on the Chinese markets due to the US-China trade war.

Viscose staple fibre prices jumped in China, fell in India, and remained flat in Pakistan during the week. In China, VSF offers rose further this week amid limited availability and decreasing supply in the markets. A few downstream buyers restocked VSF again this week despite having bought in huge quantities previously.

Polyester chain (ethylene, PTA, MEG, PET chips, PSF, PFY) prices in Asia rose in the week ended 5th July 2019 on healthy trading activity, despite slightly weaker upstream crude oil prices. However, polyester feedstock, paraxylene markets declined amid expanding capacities and soft demand.

Nylon or polyamide markets in Asia surged on limited availability and picking up buying sentiment during the week. Demand from the downstream plants improved this week.

Cotton prices were stable on the market on Saturday amidst modest trading. The Karachi Cotton Association kept its spot rate unchanged at Rs8,200.

Cotton experts said a steady trend prevailed in the market as the cotton arrival which is improving with each passing day.

They said the quality of cotton from Sindh is attractive for mill owners. Phutti (seed cotton) from Sindh is priced higher by Rs100 and ranged Rs3,600-4,225 while Punjab variety is pegged at Rs3,550-4,150.

Nylon and PET plastic pile carpet should be banned because of toxic chemicals added to them, according to the managing director of Australian woollen carpet company Supertuft.

In an open document, Greg Galt voices concerns over "toxic fire retardants" and stain resistant chemicals. "Carpets that have a toxic and non-biodegradable pile are accumulating on the floors of residences and offices all over the country," he warns. "When it comes time to replace these carpets, local municipalities and governments will realise that they have an environmental catastrophe on their hands."
