Pak CCAC estimates cotton output at 12.60mn bales for season 2017-18

The Pakistan Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) during its second meeting held here on Thursday with Federal Secretary Ministry of Commerce and Textile Industry Hassan Iqbal in the chair, reviewed the crop output in the country for the current season and estimated cotton crop production volume at 12.60 million bales for the crop season 2017-18.

The meeting was informed that cotton crop output was remained same as forecast in the first review meeting and total production was estimated at 12.60 million bales during the current season.

At the beginning of current season, the Federal Committee on Agriculture had projected that farmers would plant cotton over an area of 3.009 million hectares and produce 14.101 million bales. But Pakistan’s cotton produce is expected to remain lower at around 10.542 million bales in the current season because farmers under-sowed the cash crop on the fears of further drop in prices.

First meeting of the Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) for the season 2016-17 was held in the chair with Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry Amir M. Khan Marwat to assess the area and volume of current cotton crop in the country. The CCAC who had initial estimated cotton production at 14.1 million bales has been slashed by 20 percent to 11.27 million bales for the current season on Tuesday.

The Pakistan government has so far revised down its crop estimate almost by 30 percent this year from an initial target of 15.4 million bales set in February. Local cotton demand is estimated at 15.5 million bales this year. The latest estimate suggests the crop size will not exceed 10.8 million bales (of 170 kilogram) from 11.4 million bales forecasted last month. The Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC), in a meeting held earlier this week, sees additional shortfall of 600,000 bales this crop season.

The Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) after several revisions had finally set a target of 12.36 million bales for 2013-2014. However, the current production statistics depict that cotton output will be higher than last year's. The country's cotton output is likely to surpass 13 million bales mark against last year's production of 12.9 million bales. The final production report will be issued by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) in mid March.
