The Indian textile industry see tremendous growth potential and it’s market size is expected to touch USD 250 billion in the next two years from USD 150 billion now. Textile industry seek for a uniform duty of 5pc under GST

The government has already announced special packages for different segments of the textile industry in June last year and for made ups (an article manufactured and/or stitched from any type of cloth, other than a garment) in December. But now the focus is on GST which is a new tax regime and it will definitely impact the Indian textile industry.

The industry was expecting a special package for powerloom sector to be announced shortly but they do not expect any major announcement in the budget, a spokesperson for the industry said.

Garment retailers in India have started gradually shifting from the maximum retail price regime (MRP) to fixed price regime after Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, while announcing the Union Budget 2016-17, announced a 2% levy of excise duty on garments and made ups with retail price of over Rs 1,000.

Gujarat's textile policy 2012 plan to attract around Rs 20,000 crore investment and 2.5 million new jobs by 2017, so far under the policy, 549 textile units have got approval and attracted investment worth Rs 9,208 crore through varied units such as weaving, made-ups, processing, spinning, ginning and technical textiles.

The latest nod is for a textile and apparel park coming up on 62 acres in Surat and will house 42 manufacturing units and generate 1,900 jobs. So far, 12 such parks have received in-principle nod.

Indian garments export likely to continue performing better than those of textiles for some more time due to wider geographical spread of its export markets. While textile exports is affected due to an excessive dependence on China, reports Banikinkar Pattanayak in New Delhi. In the new Foreign Trade Policy 2015-20 all benefits on exports to African countries has been removed. According to the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL) a textile industry body, removal of benefits on exports to African countries will affect shipments of value added products like cotton dyed and printed fabrics and made-ups to African countries.

Apparel, Made-Ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council has got affiliated with the biggest institute of Apparel Trainings i.e. the Apparel Training and Design Centre, which has more than 170 centers across India and churns out more than 50000 students a year.

The mandate given to the Council includes creation of National Occupational Standards, Affiliating Training Providers in Apparel Trainings and assessing and certifying the trainees of such Institutes/Training Providers.
