Sharp increase in yarn prices have hit the powerloom units very badly and most of suppliers have now decided to cut production by downing their shutters once in a week to stay in the business by avoiding huge losses.

"We are trying our best to clock a handsome business ahead of Diwali. But, we are finding it difficult to meet the orders as yarn prices have gone up," said K Suresh, president of Erode Powerloom Owners Association (EPOA).

Indian garments export likely to continue performing better than those of textiles for some more time due to wider geographical spread of its export markets. While textile exports is affected due to an excessive dependence on China, reports Banikinkar Pattanayak in New Delhi. Textile exports include a range of products such as raw cotton, yarn, fabrics, made-ups, carpets, jutes, etc.

Bangladesh jute spinners forced to cut production due to turmoil

The political turmoil in Bangladesh has hit jute export trade and income of the country's 96 private jute spinners. Overall export earnings and activities of the factories have been hampered because of blockade coupled with hartals enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance, the Bangladesh Jute Spinners association said.

The Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) has raised the demand ahead of the Union Budget to impose duty on imports of jute goods from Bangladesh that has grown by 35 percent in the April-December period of this fiscal at the expense of domestic manufacturers. Over the same period, the domestic jute bags manufacturers have cut production by more than 25 percent.

Under the SAARC treaty, there is zero duty on import of jute goods from Bangladesh, thereby creating a non level playing field between jute manufacturers of India and Bangladesh.
