US-China trade war to create opportunity for textile sector

The USA has hiked additional tariff to 25% on US$ 200 billion imports from China, which is an opportunity for the Indian textiles industry, said CITI chairman Sanjay K Jain.

He stated that due to the ongoing trade war between the United States of America (USA) and China, the USA has hiked additional tariff to 25% on US$ 200 billion imports from China, applicable from 10th May 2019.

He further stated that the additional tariff hike covers Textile Chapters: 50-60.

Nearly 5,000 exhibitors from the areas of textiles and garments, shoes, cases and bags, recreational products, medicine and healthcare products and food recently offered a detailed overview of their evolving global trade as part of Phase 3 of the 125th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair).

The fair which opened on April 15 concluded on May 5, and was held in Guangzhou, China.

Every second, the equivalent of a truckload of fabric is thrown into a landfill or burned, leaching chemicals (such as dye) or non-biodegradable synthetic fabrics (such as polyester) into the ground. Every year, roughly USD 500 billion of barely worn clothing is discarded, even though manufacturing these items takes a tremendous toll on the environment – using coal and petroleum to create synthetic fibers and pesticides to grow natural ones, including cotton.

Encouraged by the government’s initiatives to help reduce the cost of energy for exporters, major Punjab-based textile groups on Friday announced that they plan to invest $1 billion in new value-added textile projects and capacity expansion for exports.

No fur in New York City?

A burgeoning movement to outlaw fur is seeking to make its biggest statement yet in the fashion mecca of New York City.

Lawmakers are pushing a measure that would ban the sale of all new fur products in the city where such garments were once common and style-setters including Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Joe Namath and Sean "Diddy" Combs have all rocked furs over the years.

A similar measure in the state Capitol in Albany would impose a statewide ban on the sale of any items made with farmed fur and ban the manufacture of products made from trapped fur.
