The fashion bizz gets a tough enough time (and rightly so) for being one of the world’s most-polluting industries. Add in the fact that the most prevalent material in our clothes is also one of the worst culprits in polluting the planet and you can see why cotton is currently public enemy #1.

But why is the fluffy cotton crop so bad for the planet? And what can we do about it? GLAMOUR spoke to Charlotte Turner, Head of Sustainable Fashion & Textiles at sustainability and communications consultancy Eco-Age to get the low-down.

The apparel retailer said that the composition of inventory has improved, implying it will become easier to sell the garments.

Hennes & Mauritz AB surged after the struggling Swedish clothing retailer showed progress coping with a buildup of unsold garments, raising hopes that the worst may be over after a three-year slump in earnings.

Inventory dropped slightly as a proportion of sales, easing to 18.2% at the end of May from a record 18.9% as of last August, H&M said Thursday. CEO Karl-Johan Persson said H&M still aims to boost operating profit this year.

Verona is not just the fictional home of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The Northern Italian city now lays claim to a denim archive housing more than 15,000 pieces dating as far back as the mid-19th century.

Laundry and garment manufacturer, Elleti Group, celebrated last week the grand opening of its denim museum with a host of industry friends and partners.

Themed ‘Innovating the World of Textiles’, the 18th edition of ITMA, the world’s most established textile and garment technology exhibition, concluded successfully in Barcelona, Spain.

The global textile and garment manufacturing industry converged at ITMA 2019, chalking up new records for the exhibition which has been held every four years since 1951. It featured many exciting new product launches and innovative technologies and products, including those that leverage the Internet of Things, by 1717 exhibitors from 45 countries.

China's textile, garment exports rise 2.8 percent in May

China's export of textiles and garments rose 2.8 percent year-on-year to 23.8 billion U.S. dollars in May, according to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

In breakdown, the country's export of textiles stood at 11.6 billion U.S. dollars, up 3.9 percent from the same period last year, while garments rose 1.7 percent to 12.2 billion U.S. dollars, the ministry said, citing data from the General Administration of Customs.

The proposals from Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee to begin to address the thoroughly outsized contribution of the fashion industry to the trashing of our planet were modest.

If they could be criticised, it was for that very modesty.

They started with the proposal for 1p per garment to be taken as a levy, raising £35 million a year to fund better collection and sorting of garments to stop them ending up in landfill.

Apparel Export Promotion Council sets up a buyer-seller meet in Spain

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) will hold its annual buyer-seller meet in Madrid, Spain, on October 9 and 10 hoping to raise apparel exports from India to that country.

"We have been receiving good responses to the buyer-seller meets, which we have been organizing in Spain since 2008,” AEPC deputy director C Eswarasundar said in a statement.

"If someone really cared about buying ethically sourced, green clothes then they wouldn't shop at Boohoo," shopper Camilla tells the BBC on Oxford Street.

She is commenting on the fast fashion retailer's first recycled clothing range - made with reclaimed plastics - which was unveiled this week.

The 22-year-old's view is not surprising, given the millions of low cost, fast fashion clothes that Boohoo sells every year.

Readymade garment exports go up in May

Export of readymade garments has increased 9.25% in April-May this year compared to the corresponding period last year.

“This is clearly because of the support announced by the government in March 2019 for garments and made-ups,” said Sanjay K. Jain, chairman, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry. The Centre announced a Scheme for Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) in March.
