Cotton is in the grips of the bears, and fresh U.S. supply forecasts coming this week will probably keep it there.

Prices tumbled to a three-year low Tuesday amid the outlook for big supplies at a time when consumption growth is slowing and American exports are hurting. Hedge funds are holding their biggest-ever bet that the declines will continue. Meanwhile, traders and analysts expect that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will raise its outlook for domestic stockpiles, with the hoard forecast to reach a 12-year high.

Every second, the equivalent of a truckload of fabric is thrown into a landfill or burned, leaching chemicals (such as dye) or non-biodegradable synthetic fabrics (such as polyester) into the ground. Every year, roughly USD 500 billion of barely worn clothing is discarded, even though manufacturing these items takes a tremendous toll on the environment – using coal and petroleum to create synthetic fibers and pesticides to grow natural ones, including cotton.

Cotton trading remained moderate amid firm physical prices, traders said. At the The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) spot rates were readjusted overnight by Rs 50 per maund to stay at Rs 6,650 per maund.

Forward deals for a month period also changed hands that pushed physical prices in green zone. Floor brokers said that buyers made deals for all grades besides deals for better and second grade of lint for blending purpose remained firm and deals changed hands at around Rs 6,475 per maund to Rs 6,675 per maund during the trading session.

The Indian Cotton Federation is organizing a two-day conference on “Indian Cotton Scenario in the Current Context 2016-2017” on August 19 and 20 at Coimbatore as the Indian cotton sector needs a comprehensive study on challenges, requirements, and scope to increase production.

About 400 people, including cotton ginners, traders, textile industry representatives, and brokers are expected to participate at the conference. They will deliberate on cotton area, demand, supply and price situations, and sustainable management practices.

Brisk demand for fine and second grade lint kept trading activity moderate at cotton market on Saturday. Moreover buyers made forward deals in all grades that kept market in firm frame past week, said traders at Karachi Cotton Association (KCA).

The KCA kept the spot rate at Rs 6,500 per maund while fine grade fetched better prices at around Rs 6,600 per maund on higher demand.
