Garment, textile export up by 9.8 per percent in Vietnam in 4 months

Vietnam gained over 9.4 billion U.S. dollars from exporting garments and textiles in the first four months of this year, up 9.8 percent year-on-year, according to the country's Ministry of Industry and Trade on Wednesday.

In April alone, the country raked in 2.3 billion U.S. dollars from selling the products offshore, rising 7.1 percent.

Between January and April, largest importers of Vietnamese garments and textiles included the United States, Japan, the European Union and South Korea.

Fashion brand H&M has become the first major retailer to list individual supplier details for each garment on its website to increase transparency in an industry with high risks of slavery and labour abuses.

The Sweden-based multinational’s move was hailed by workers rights groups who said it was a step forward, but added that the data may not be particularly meaningful to shoppers without additional information to put it into context.

The first woman to head one of Bangladesh’s biggest garment associations said on Tuesday she would boost female leadership as most factory workers were women, amid scrutiny over safety.

Rubana Huq, 55, is managing director of Mohammadi Group, which owns a string of factories supplying brands like H&M and Primark in Bangladesh, the world’s second largest garment exporter, employing 4 million people.
