Offshoring of apparel manufacturing has been a blessing for many developing countries. The readymade garments (RMG) industry, employer of 4 million workers, mostly rural women, contributes more than 80 percent to Bangladesh's export revenue. Low-cost labour has been the primary reason for western retailers to wait for months to get a shipment from offshore destinations. Once technology becomes a cheaper alternative to the least costly manufacturing labour, will apparel manufacturing complete the journey in returning home?

Tirupur garment exporters have been promoting the NIFT-TEA Knitwear Institute situated in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu to open two outreach centres outside the state. AKH Group, one of the highly integrated leading group in apparel manufacturing and exporting from Bangladesh which supplies to the like of M&S, Gap Inc, H&M, Primark, PVH and Debenhams has opened a new green factory, AKH Eco Apparel Ltd, investing Tk150 crore (US$25m) to set up the factory.

The new factory has been LEED certified by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for its eco friendly measures. The new factory has also received gold certification from LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Gold is the second highest LEED rating, after platinum.
