Vietnamese garment sector make efforts to remodel its production methods

Vietnam one of the world's largest garment producers to maintain its status is making all efforts to remodel its production methods. The move comes in the light of advantages offered by the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and other free trade agreements that the country has entered into with regional trade blocs around the world.

According to Le Tien Truong, Vietnam Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) General Director after years of manufacturing, Vietnamese enterprises have gained much experience in manufacturing, management and labour.

The European Textile and Clothing Confederation (Euratex) from the time of negotiations over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) has been closely working with its US counterparts and the European Commission to make sure that companies will benefit from this free trade agreement.

The TTIP offers an opportunity to keep high consumer safety, user information, and environmental standards for the textiles and clothing industry, while removing unnecessary burdens to trade.

The Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) at an Exporters' Meet held at Tirupur, Panda made an appeal to take up the issue of 24 X 7 customs clearance at the ports, a proposal announced by the Finanace Minister Arun Jaitley in the budget, to expedite the movement of garments.

Union textile secretary, Sanjay Kumar Panda in response to the appeal made has assured the knitwear garment exporters to take up various issues either confronting them or pending for implementation with the concerned ministries and try to resolve them.

Korea-Canada FTA to help eleminate textile tariff within three years

It has been nine years since the two countries, Korea and Canada began negotiating the terms of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2005. President Park Geun-hye, who is currently making a state visit to Canada, will hold a summit meeting on the 23rd with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at Ottawa and sign a free trade agreement.

According to Ahn Jong-beom, the senior presidential economic adviser, the Korea-Canada FTA will liberalize trade between the two countries by 92-95 percent within three years and by 99 percent within ten years in terms of import volume.

Sri Lanka and China both anticipate that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the island tomorrow, a first by a Chinese head of state in 28 years, will expand cooperation and ties in trade and economy between the two countries.

According to the government of Sri Lanka, both countries in recent years have developed increasingly closer economic and trade relations and a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries will boost Sri Lanka's future development.

The textiles and garment sector is one of the largest industries in Vietnam and a top foreign currency earner. Its textile and garment export turnover has touched US$2.2 billion in August, an increase of 0.2 per cent from July.

But despite the high turnover the value added of the industry remained relatively low due to its reliance on imported raw materials, said General Secretary of Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, Dang Phuong Dung.

FIEO proposes free trade agreement with China to boost India’s export

India has a trade deficit of about USD 37 billion with the neighbouring country to overcome this and help boost India’s export; FIEO an apex exporter’s body today put forward a proposal for a free agreement (FTA) with China. In fact, India should resume the FTA with the European Union too.

According to FIEO President Rafeeq Ahmed, India will benefit by entering into FTA with China. The government should not hesitate to talk about this. If Thailand can have an FTA with China, India should also seriously look at this.

Bangladesh seeks to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with Turkey to boost bilateral trade and investment. A high-powered Bangladesh delegation headed by an additional secretary of the ministry will be in Turkey early August seeking to increase bilateral trade and investment between the two countries. They would be negotiation over signing of a FTA with Turkey for mutual benefits.

According to Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development it is the country’s first agreement with an Asian nation .They expect the pact to boost Canadian exports by 32%, adding C$1.7bn to the domestic economy. This will help the Canadian firms to participate in the business chase with chiefly South Korea, the US and the EU.
