Sri Lanka's apparel and textile export segment is likely to experience the highest rate of growth in overseas shipment in 2018 as Sri Lanka focus on achieving $20 billion in export earnings by 2020, Sri Lanka CEO survey have resoundingly voted for textile and apparel as the growth engine for exports in the year ahead, as per the a recent survey conducted by the Oxford Business Group (OBG).

Textile is considered the backbone of Sri Lanka's trade able sector comprising 47% of total exports in 2016.

India saw major slow down in export of polyester spun yarns to Slovenia

India exported a total of 2.56 million kgs of polyester spun yarn to 47 countries in November 2015 totaling US$5.73 million, out of which 16.8 percent was shipped by Turkey. The unit price realization was averaging US$2.24 per kg down by US cents 39 a kg and in value terms it was also 9.7 percent down as compared to November 2014.

In November, thirteen new destinations were found for polyester yarn of which, Nigeria, Ecuador, Cote D'Ivoire, Togo and Mauritania were the major ones.

Sri Lanka and China both anticipate that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the island tomorrow, a first by a Chinese head of state in 28 years, will expand cooperation and ties in trade and economy between the two countries.

According to the government of Sri Lanka, both countries in recent years have developed increasingly closer economic and trade relations and a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries will boost Sri Lanka's future development.

China becomes the major importer of Indian coir and coir products

China is the biggest importer of coir based products from India. During 2013-14, a total of 192,110 tones of coir products, valued at Rs 360.5 crore were shipped to China, a growth of 32 percent on value terms, according to Indian Coir Board.

India exported 537,040 tones of coir and coir based products, valued at Rs 1476 crore. In the previous financial year, total export was 429,501 tones valued at Rs 1116 crore, a rise by 25 percent was recorded in the volume of coir based products.
