Pak-Thailand to hold discussions this month to reach final decision on FTA

Pakistan and Thailand to reach a final decision on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be holding its eighth round of talks which will be held from August 21 to 23. During the 8th round, talks would be held on the text of agreement, tariff reduction modalities, request lists from both sides and offer lists.

Both sides had exchanged the offer lists of items for free trade, including automobile and textile sectors for removing the reservations of the sectors, a senior official of the Ministry of Commerce said.

Pakistan and Turkey’s Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be signed on August 14, for enhancing the bilateral trade between two countries. The seventh round of negotiations between the two countries on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was milestone to reach the final agreement.

Secretary Ministry of Commerce Younas Dhaga led Pakistan’s delegation in negotiation on FTA between Pakistan and Turkey. Pakistan and Turkey discussed the specific sectors including textile sector during the negotiation, a senior official of Ministry of Commerce said.

The seventh round of negotiations on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to be held between Pakistan and Turkey to finalize the agreement by the end of May 2017. The two sides would exchange provisional lists for a final agreement in upcoming round of dialogue.

A senior official of the Ministry of Commerce said that during the negotiation, the two Countries would also discuss specific sectors including textile sector. Also the two sides would hold discussions on agreement on goods, services and investment.

The Pakistan government views Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Turkey as the key to revive the textile economy. Currently, Turkey has levied heavy duties on Pakistani textile products and FTA would not be possible without lifting or easing the rates of duties by the Turkish government.

The introduction of FTA would be helpful in earning foreign exchange reserves from the export of textile as well as other such as fruits and vegetables. It will also facilitate the provision of comparatively cheaper products to Turkish consumers.
