Only 21% circular fashion target met so far

Signatories of the 2020 Circular Fashion System Commitment, an initiative launched in 2017 by the Global Fashion Agenda (GFA), will have to hurry up if they still want to reach all the circularity targets they committed to. GFA’s second yearly assessment of the progress made by fashion brands and retailers was published today and the results are rather disappointing: it turns out they have reached only 45 (21 percent) of the 213 targets set.

GAP to go with 100% sustainable cotton sourcing

Gap brands are committed to sourcing 100% sustainable cotton within the next six years, the apparel group announced in a press release. The flagship Gap brand committed to 100% sustainable cotton by 2021, Old Navy by 2022 and Banana Republic by 2023.

Gap's standard for what is sustainable includes cotton grown by methods approved by the Better Cotton Initiative, organic, recycled and verified American and Australian-grown cotton.

Target aims for viscose textile transparency

Mass market retailer Target has today joined over 170 brands and apparel industry stakeholders by committing to the CanopyStyle initiative in a bid to ensure the use of ancient and endangered forest fibre is not found in its own viscose textile supply chain.

Target says it will “pursue, with a goal of achieving by (end of) 2020, viscose apparel garment supply chains that are free of ancient and endangered forests, endangered species and controversial sources.”

With the start of cotton harvesting season, the spread of irrigated farming as a part of the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP), cotton, which is described as "white gold," has started being planted on larger cultivation areas and has become the favorite of farmers in the region.

In the Harran Plain of the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, which meets 42 percent of Turkey's production, cotton farmers are satisfied with the yield expectation of more than 1 million tons.

American clothing and accessories chain Gap in partnership with Indian textile giant Arvind is finally set to open its first store in India on Saturday. Gap has been late to enter India compared to other international high street brands such as, Marks & Spencer and Zara, has kept its prices low.
The company to open 40 stores in the country and is eyeing sales of around Rs 1,000 crore in the next six years.
