Pakistani new cotton season takes off with a good amount of phutti

Pakistani new cotton season 2014-15 has taken off with some good amount of phutti reaching ginning factories of Punjab, as sowing in Sindh is delayed due to cyclone. Previously, the new cotton season started from Badin, Thatta, Sindh and Ghuddo.

Around 4000 maund phutti (equal to 300 bales) arrived at two ginning factories of Haroonabad, Punjab. Ginners are expecting that two factories of Shahdadpur are also likely to start operation during the week to start supply of new cotton crop to textile mills.

The forthcoming first Budget 2014-15 of the new government in India is likely to enhance incentives to the labour-intensive textile industry which will boost its exports and manufacturing productivty.

The government may increase allocation for the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) in the Budget as part of the support to the textiles sector. TUFS was launched in 1999 to facilitate modernisation and upgradation of the textiles industry by extending credit at lower interest rates to entrepreneurs both in the organised and the unorganised sector.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Taiwan and France on June 12 in Paris, paving way for wider textile-related cooperation between the two nations. Under the agreement, both sides have agreed to boost bilateral personnel exchanges to promote joint marketing, production, R&D and technology transfer. The MoU was signed between Taiwan Textile Research Institute and UP-TEX.

According to data released by the India garment exporter body, Apparel Export Promotion Council, textiles exports in 2013 were at US$40 billion, ranking second in world trade. It has overtaken Germany and Italy to emerge second largest textile exporter, but lags China, World No. 1. China's exports are nearly seven times higher than India at US$274 billion.

Developing countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam have emerged as major suppliers to retail chains in Europe and the US on the back of cheap labour and lower-duty access.

Man-made textiles export jumps 25 per cent in 2013-14

According to data released by the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), export of MMF yarn, fabrics and made-ups jumped 25 per cent increase in fiscal 2013-14 to Rs 31,000 crore from previous year. In March 2014, these exports registered a growth of 22.28 per cent to Rs 2,972 crore from Rs 2,375 crore in the corresponding month a year ago.
 
During the year, UAE, the USA, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Italy were the leading export destinations that contributed majorly in the growth of export.
 

First administrative move, RMG brought under textiles ministry

In its first move, the newly formed government with Santosh Gangwar as minister for textiles, has brought Readymade Garment (RMG) industry under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute for smooth management and effective coordination, an official told news agencies.

"The decision to this effect was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting on 5 May," the official told agencies.

As precipitation improved over the last five days across Texas, the country's biggest cotton producing state, the prospect of improved supplies heightened showed the US government data. The data released after market close on 27 May reinforced expectations that fibre availability will improve in the coming season beginning 1 August. However, the release of the report led to cotton futures falling to a four-month low on 28 May.
