Kolkata’s hand-embroidered saris started slowly losing its popularity since 2007 mainly due to f Surat's embroidery sector. Surat embroidery industry in 2006 imported computerized Schiffli and multi headed embroidery machines from China, Taiwan and Japan. With the help of these machine Surti embroidery manufacturers are able to allegedly copy and manufacturing low-cost look-alikes Kolkata’s exquisite sari designs.

Areas like Varachha, Katargam, Pandol, Ved-Road, Udhna and Pandesara have become the hub of embroidery sector in Surat.

Pakistani textile earning during the nine months of FY14 sees a drop of 9 percent

The Pakistani textile sector after performing well in the first half of the fiscal year with the appreciation in rupee by almost 6 percent against dollar in the third quarter of FY14 (Jan-Mar 2014), led to significant drop in profits of the export-oriented textile companies by 73 percent only in the third quarter of FY14.

This significant drop in profitability in the last quarter eroded the overall earnings of the textile sector for nine months. Textile sector recorded a decline of 9 percent in earnings during the nine months (July-March) of FY14.

Zohra Chatterji, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles has expressed serious concern over the negative growth witnessed in the handloom sector at the meet organised by the National Handloom Development Corporation under the aegis of Development Commissioner for Handlooms and supported by National Textile Corporation for establishing market linkages and capacity building.

The meet is organized to bring together weavers, designers and retail brands on one platform to exchange ideas and transact business.

Ethiopia’s huge potential for raw cotton, the availability of labor, power and water, fast economic growth and access to the international market has helped Shri Vallabh Pittie (SVP) Group, an Indian company decide on setting up largest cotton mill at the industrial zone in Kombolcha in Ethiopia. SVP chose Kombolcha because of its proximity to the cotton growing regions of Metema and Humera.

The cotton mill will produce cotton yarn exclusively for export purpose. The construction of the project has already started from 2nd of May and should be fully operational by next year.

The premium quality lint which are lying unsold from the current crop with the ginners witnessed rise in prices by Rs.300 to Rs.400 per maund (37.32 kgs) within one week in the ready market. The current unsold crop is less than 3 lakh bales.

The unsold stock lying with ginners is likely to see reduction in the quantity from 3 lakh to 2.50 lakh bales by the middle of this month. Much of it is of lower quality. This year (2013-2014) Pakistan has produced about 13.5 million bales (155 kgs) of cotton on an ex-gin basis.

Praedium acquires 90 pc of Montefibre Hispania acrylic plant in Spain

Modaes, the Spanish textile and fashion magazine on 29 April reported that after a month and a half of negotiations Praedium acquired 90 per cent of Montefibre Hispania, Montefibre’s plant in Miranda de Ebro, Spain. The Italian group Montefibre retains the remaining 10 per cent until bankruptcy proceedings for the Spanish plant are finalised.

The plant, which employed 250 people, is designed to produce 95 ktons of acrylic but has been closed for a year. Praedium, which already owns Nylstar and the Spanish fashion accessory brand Lupo, intends to restart the plant in September.

TUFS facilitates modernisation and upgradation of textiles industry by providing credit at reduced rates to entrepreneurs both in the organised and the unorganised sector in the textiles industry. The Textile ministry to benefit small units in the powerloom sector will be introducing hire-purchase scheme under TUFS.

The Indian powerloom sector has around 43 lakh weavers who are in severe need of modernisation and the ministry is hopeful that this hire-purchase scheme will benefit them as each machinery costs Rs 20-30 lakh.
