Rupee weakening against the dollar to benefit the textile and clothing category

Apparel exports, which were almost stagnant for the last couple of years, is expected to do better. It will give the garment producers cushion against increasing raw material prices. A. Sakthivel, vice chairman of the Council said that, “However, buyers will ask for cut in rates even for existing orders, and we might not get the full benefit.”

There is positive feedback from the government on increasing the drawback rates. The Apparel Export Promotion Council has sought a number of interventions from the government, which include more incentives, continuation of the duty-free import of speciality fabric up to 1 percent of export value of garments, round-the-clock customs clearance, withdrawal of GST on air-freight and duty-free import of samples in the forthcoming Union budget, as the the labour intensive textile and garment companies are facing increasing competition from Vietnam and Bangladesh.

The centre to act as a launch pad for the startups – Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), a release from the council informed.

Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) plans to set up office in Ahmedabad to boost apparel export from Gujarat and also bring in the required international exposure and opportunities for the industry.

As Gujarat is the highest cotton producing state and has a burgeoning textile industry but the exports from the state, especially those for apparels are relatively low.

The council's office which will be operating out of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) will begin operations in the city by the end of December this year.

The Bihar industries department to attract investments in the state apparel and textile sector in association with Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) organised an apparel meet at Ludhiana on Friday to showcase the initiatives taken by the Bihar government.

With subdued demand from key importing countries, the growth in apparel export may stay muted for a consecutive year in FY17. According to the Apparel Export Promotion Council’s (AEPC’s) estimates, it is likely to close at $17.3 billion (Rs1.12 lakh crore) in 2016-17, up by roughly two percent from $16.9 billion (Rs 1.10 lakh crore) in the previous financial year.

India's apparel exports likely to touch more than $30 billion in the next three years, according to industry body AEPC as the government’s future-oriented initiatives to modernize the country’s textile sector will help push apparel sector.

Apparel Export Promotion Council, referring to the government’s Rs.6,000 cr special package announced in June for the textiles sector said that this move, along with innovative designs prowess will bring about a paradigm change for the industry.

Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), an apparel industry body is expecting around Rs 5,000 crore fresh investments to flow into the sector during the current fiscal which may create as many as two million jobs with textile booster package of Rs6,000 crore announced by the government.

AEPC chairman Ashok G Rajani said that based on the initial feedback he has received, around Rs 5,000 crore may flow into the industry in fresh capex this fiscal year itself as government announcement of textile package comes as a game changer.
