Lebanese textiles factory in turmoil

The Mzannar family’s 300-year-old textile business survived Lebanon’s civil war by making uniforms for militiamen. But its business savvy was no match for years of economic malaise that followed and it has now shut its factory.

The head of Lebanon’s chamber of commerce chief said last year nearly 2,200 businesses had closed, warning that more would collapse. And while there is dispute over those numbers, Lebanese mostly agree the economy is in dire shape.

Special commission -With the support of the Goethe-Institut Istanbul, artist Şakir Gökçebağ has created a special commission for the exhibition. Gökçebağ decontextualizes everyday objects belonging to individuals and rearranges them site-specifically into new narratives. Among the artist’s main objects of focus are oriental rugs, which he has also rearranged site-specifically in his work “Cosmos” commissioned for the exhibition.

Getting Gr3n pitch perfect - It was clear that we were in for a high octane performance when Dr Maurizio Crippa took to the stage to pitch Gr3n (pronounced ‘green’), as he immediately asked the audience to raise their hands if they had never used a backpack or bought a T-shirt. Felicitating the awardees, managing director of Thiagarajar Mills Karumuthu T Kannan said there was an immediate need for an institute to train textile managers, as the industry was not getting textile graduates who preferred other jobs.

Industrial bodies like Confederation of Indian Industry, Southern India Mills Association and South India Textile Research Association should take measures to start such an institute, he said.

The international collaborative research, which includes experts from the Centre for Graphene Science at the University of Exeter, the Universities of Aveiro and Lisbon in Portugal, and CenTexBel in Belgium, is published in the scientific journal Flexible Electronics.

The new research instead integrates the electronic devices into the fabric of the material, by coating electronic fibres with light-weight, durable components that will allow images to be shown directly on the fabric.

To see more of Girard, the first major Alexander Girard retrospective will be heading to Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in May 2019. Girard designed the patterns for different purposes. Plus and Step were originally created in 1960 as printed napkins for a restaurant in the Time-Life Building in New York City, while Check was a pattern made in 1956 for Georg Jensen’s table setting. Circles, from 1952, and Edges, from 1962, were taken from a drawing and collage, respectively, and transformed into textiles.

Woven in 100 per cent New Zealand wool in Scandinavia, the blankets are made using twisted yarns that give them blankets a unique multicolour effect – which the brand likens to the effect of looking through a kaleidoscope.

"To weave the blankets we used two yarns with the same thickness but in the different colours," said ZigZagZurich. It explained that, "The yarns are twisted together and then woven.
