This August, buyers, designers, and thought leaders in the footwear industry will mix, mingle and source material and components at the event of the summer: the Materials Show. Taking place one week apart on both the East and West Coasts, the semi-annual Materials Show is one of the most forward-thinking trade expos in the industry. Footwear designers seek out inspiration for upcoming seasons, and buyers source the practical components, textiles and processes they need to turn those designs into reality.

The footwear industry today is breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Even though the trade dispute between the United States and China has moved away from escalation and towards reconciliation since the G20 meeting in June in Osaka, the consequences of this already year-long exchange of blows between two big players in the international cotton industry are clearly noticeable in the market. There are widespread insecurities in completing contracts in the international cotton trade. “Uncertainty is the new normal,” summed up Bremen Cotton Exchange in its Cotton Telegram of 16th July 2019.

I recently spent two years living in Chicago. As a British person adapting to life in America, I faced various struggles: terrible public transport, the complex rules of baseball, the virtual non-existence of meringues. But none were as all-consuming as the daily struggle to remain at a comfortable temperature. My days were spent either piling on jumpers and thermals, or reluctantly dressing in the lightest materials I could find. Chicago in the winter is so cold that any day above zero degrees is considered balmy.

Kelly Davis has started doing something she once considered unthinkable: buying clothes at Costco.

The 31-year-old had long resisted the warehouse chain’s clothing aisle; it just felt weird buying dresses and shirts at the same place she bought groceries. Plus, she said, “It’s where my mom shops."

But eventually, a pair of Jessica Simpson jeans — light blue, distressed, with holes — for only $13 did her in.

“Costco has really stepped up its game,” said Davis, who lives near Dallas. “The clothes are actually stylish. It’s not just old mom stuff anymore.”

At first glance, you would never know that Rich Mahoney’s clothes are different. That’s until, of course, you hear the hum of tiny robotic machinery working beneath the surface.

That’s because underneath Mahoney’s clothing is what he calls robotic clothing.

“It’s like a layer of extra muscles integrated into your clothing around your body,” he says.

Mahoney is the CEO of Seismic , a company that’s created a sort of jumpsuit that has robotic muscles positioned along the hip and around the abdomen sewn inside it.

The apparel retailer said that the composition of inventory has improved, implying it will become easier to sell the garments.

Hennes & Mauritz AB surged after the struggling Swedish clothing retailer showed progress coping with a buildup of unsold garments, raising hopes that the worst may be over after a three-year slump in earnings.

Inventory dropped slightly as a proportion of sales, easing to 18.2% at the end of May from a record 18.9% as of last August, H&M said Thursday. CEO Karl-Johan Persson said H&M still aims to boost operating profit this year.
