Demand for jute bags takes a sharp hit as govt orders dry up

The jute industry which was already going through a bad phase has taken a further hit due to the State not honouring its sourcing commitments this production season. The Minister of State for Textile (independent charge) Santosh Gangwar, will be holding talks with Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal to find out the state’s failure to place any orders for jute bags in June and July despite prior commitments.

Jute is one of the oldest industries in India depending a lot on government orders. This year the industry is facing one of its most severe challenges due to thinning demand. Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) and other mill owners have straight on blamed rapid decline in procurement of jute bags for food grains this year for piling jute stocks and drastic reduction in production.

MoTI proposes zero-rated duty on textile machinery and no rise in sales tax on textile sector

As the textile policy (2009-14) formulated by the previous government will end on June 30, 2014. The Pakistan government is contemplating to impose 17 percent sales tax on import of textile machinery on expiry of the current facility ending in June, which is covered under the zero-rated custom duty and sales tax regime. Also the 2 percent sales tax on yarn, 3 percent of fabric and 5 percent on garments would be raised to 17 percent in next two year.

Package estimated worth Rs.2000 cr being planned to improve the handloom sector

The government to improve the low prevailing efficiency of handloom sector plan to implement a revival, reform and restructuring package. Handloom sector with 27-28 lakh handloom household units and around 43 lakh handloom weavers working is able to contribute only 11% of the total cloth production, thus needs attention.

The Indian Textile Ministry has come up with a proposal aimed to reduce the debt overhang face by the handloom sector and help it grow.

India textiles looking out for duty-free access into Germany, UK

India’s largest market for textiles being European Union, India is on the lookout for duty-free access for its garments and some other textiles items into the European Union for which the Textiles Ministry is in talks with Germany and the UK. The negotiating is going on at a Government-to-Government level. Textiles Minister KS Rao said that they want the EU countries to give them the same dispensation as Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Textile Ministry urges government to increase the duty drawback rate

The Indian textile industry will have a major impact due to the decision of the European Union to give zero duty status to Pakistan. In order to overcome this situation, a proposal has been put forward to the government for increasing the duty drawback rate by the textile ministry.

Union Textile Minister Kavur Sambasiva Rao on Saturday said that it was a political decision by the EU, to help Pakistan, considering floods and various other problems being faced by that nation...,” he told reporters here on the sidelines of a convocation function.

Existing definition of ‘handloom’ retained

The Advisory Committee on Handloom Reservation Act had put forward recommendation to amend the definition of handloom before the textile ministry. The Textile Ministry on Thursday said that the existing definition of ‘handloom’ to be retained.

It clarified that no change is contemplated after a panel set up for the purpose recommended. ‘Handloom’ which has been defined as 'any loom other than power loom' under the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for Production) Act, 1985.
