Duplicate versions of Geographical Indication (GI) registered handloom products are being manufactured by the mechanized sector of the textiles and are sold in market by some textile marketing companies hampering the niche market of these products , said the Textiles Ministry on Wednesday in a press release.

Textiles Ministry to seek approval for the new national textile policy from Cabinet for which they will be approaching the Cabinet in 10-15 days, said Union Minister Santosh Gangwar today.

The new policy aims to achieve USD 300 billion textiles exports by 2024-25 and envisages creation of additional 35 million jobs.

The policy also aims to address concerns of adequate skilled work force, labour reforms, attract investments in the textile sector, and to provide a future road map for the textile and clothing industry.

The Textiles Ministry has urged the Ministry of Environment and Forests to review its proposal to mandate virtually to textile units to reduce their effluent discharge to zero, as most of the domestic processing industry is largely unorganized and consists of small and medium units. The proposed norms are inflexible in terms of capital investment and it would also have high recurring expenditure, it could lead to closure of many units.

At present, within the textile sector, only silk farming is covered under the job scheme (MGNREGS) under which workers are provided the mandatory wage in the range of Rs159-241 day, depending on states and Union territories, for 100 days a year. However, the ministry has been seeking the extension of the MGNREGS to the entire textile and garment sector, which employs some 45 million people and is the largest job provider after agriculture.

The textile ministry during the 35th edition of India International Trade Fair (IITF) that kicked off at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on Nov 14, Saturday, at a high note launched brand made its market debut with handloom products from registered sellers. Eleven handloom organisations and cooperative societies displayed sarees, stoles, shawls and fabrics tagged with the brand's logo and a label certifying their authenticity and quality.

The textile industry has been facing issues in getting subsidy under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS). Some member-units had applied for subsidy under the scheme which is pending for the past one and a half years.

The Textile Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) is an interest subsidy scheme aimed at upgrade of technology as part of measures to boost the textile and jute sectors.

Approval received for opening textile skill centres in Malwa

The cabinet has approved proposal put forward by Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Bathinda MP and union food processing industries minister for opening of two textile skill centres in Malwa region. One such centre would come up in a rural area of Bathinda and the other in Mansa.

Two days ago, the minister was inform about opening of two centres in the region by the textiles ministry.

Bathinda is known as cotton belt and the Centre wants to develop it as textile hub and opening of skill centres is the first step, the minister said.

The textile industry has been intensely lobbying for duty cuts on both domestic and import fronts, had been given hope during the previous year's budget, but the decision is yet to arrive.

The textiles ministry recently announced a Rs.427-crore scheme to promote geo-technical textiles in northeast India which would be helpful in stabilizing roads, addressing the problem of landslides and preserving water bodies. Geo-technical textiles provide the functional advantages of higher endurance and durability in roads, embankments and infrastructure projects.

Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar, while appreciating the geo-technical textiles scheme, said his government is keen to implement the scheme in the state.
