Plastic waste is one of the big problems of this time. By 2050, the oceans could contain more waste than fish. Consumer demand for recycled fashion is on the rise, and more and more sports and fashion companies work with it - in different ways.

It’s an unsightly plight and causing damage to marine life globally, as plastic from our lifestyles ends up in the oceans. According to data UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) eight million tons of waste ends up in our seas every single year, 640 thousand tons of fishing nets abandoned at the bottom of the ocean.

What both Hoffman and Helen Sahi, VP of global corporate sustainability at Unifi, hope will raise the growing popularity of recycled plastic textiles is transparency around what it actually takes to manufacture this material, and what it can be turned into. Hoffman and Unifi, along with brands like Nike and Rothy’s that use Repreve, set up a demonstration room where visitors could see how plastic bottles are turned into textiles, and what those textiles can become, during New York Fashion Week earlier this month.

Eastman is a global advanced materials and specialty additive company that produces a broad range of products found in items people use every day.After a ten-month process of sketching, sample construction, fitting and fabrication, the Sydney based design team created three designs using Naia for its Spring 2018 collection; a Kaftan, a Tank Maxi Dress, and a Sarong in a copper colour.
