Australian fashion brands are becoming more transparent about how they make their clothes, but there is still much more to be done on workers’ rights, living wage and environmental impact.

That’s according to the findings in the latest Ethical Fashion report, published by Baptist World Aid, which surveyed more than 130 companies with 480 brands.

European and U.S. fashion brands sourcing from Vietnam must stop their “harsh” tactics that push down workers’ wages and trap millions in poverty, labour rights campaigners said on Thursday.

Vietnam, which is one of the world’s largest garment manufacturers and supplies fashion chains such as Zara and H&M, is home to over 6,000 garment and textile factories that employ about 3 million people, government figures showed.

Data published this week in the UK revealed a stubborn gap between what men and women earn at fashion brands and retailers, with Farfetch, Missguided, Karen Millen and Asos among the companies reporting large disparities favouring male employees.
