Turning old clothes into everything new

Australia has a fashion problem. More than 500,000 tonnes of clothing waste is sent to landfill each year. But a new way of recycling could redirect some of our unwanted textiles from polluting the environment, by repurposing cotton waste into anything from new clothes to prosthetic knees.

Developed by our team at Deakin University, where we work on designing materials and processes for a circular economy, this solution for recycling textiles involves dissolving cotton and regenerating it into brand-new cellulose – a complex, strong carbohydrate with many industrial uses.

Australian fashion brands are becoming more transparent about how they make their clothes, but there is still much more to be done on workers’ rights, living wage and environmental impact.

That’s according to the findings in the latest Ethical Fashion report, published by Baptist World Aid, which surveyed more than 130 companies with 480 brands.

Australia, the world’s largest wool producer has touched wool exports at about Au$3 billion (approx. $2.28 billion) of which China accounts for over 70 percent of this value. China utilizes about 60 percent of all wool imported for making products that are consumed by the Chinese, compared to almost full re-export of wool around 15-20 years ago. Chinese companies use Australian wool for manufacturing a range of products including apparel, sportswear and shoes. Strong demand from growing affluent Chinese consumers has pushed up Australian wool prices to a record high this season.

After a three-year long resolute quest since 2012 by Sri Lanka’s apex export facilitator EDB to link with nine top global retailers, a visiting high powered multinational buyer team has finally linked with EDB and Lankan apparel giants on Nov.27 at Mt Lavinia Hotel.

The State Minister of International Trade Sujeewa Senasinghe upon hearing the development over the phone and added that they believe that this breakthrough could help them to move towards their new apparel export target set by the industry. This is a good news for their surging apparel sector.
