Slow off take of cotton yarn and grey fabric by buyer, once again pushed cotton prices under pressure when trading resumed on Monday at cotton market. The depressed yarn and grey fabric markets are taking a toll over the workings of the cotton market, with global trend continuing to influence domestic trading, brokers said.

Leading spinners continue to be absent while some small spinners indulge in buying on a day-to-day basis resulting in erratic market behavior.
Brokers said that leading spinners holding substantial cotton inventories have booked lint for import.

Active trading was witnessed at the Karachi Cotton Exchange on Wednesday after cotton arrivals report was released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Assocication (PCGA) on Tuesday and cotton remaining stable.

Yazman Mandi’s 400 bales were sold at Rs6,800/maund, 400 bales of Bahawalnagar at Rs6,850/maund, 2,400 bales of Rahimyar Khan at Rs6,800 to Rs6,925/maund and another lot of 2,000 bales of Rahimyar Khan exchanged hands at Rs7,000/maund.

Dull trading was record at cotton market on Thursday by the Karachi Cotton Exchange. The spot spot rates stood unchanged at Rs6,650/maund (37.324kg) and Rs7,127/40kg.

Ex-Karachi rates also remained unchanged at Rs6,785/maund and Rs7,272/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

KCE recorded domestic transactions of around 2,500 bales in between Rs6,300/maund to Rs7,000/maund from three stations that included Sultanabad, Punj Moro and Bahawalpur.

Pakistan cotton production has declined by 5,100,000 bales during the current season which has caused loss of Rs200 billion to national kitty. The federal commerce minister Khurram Dastgir Khan expressing serious concern over the decline in cotton production situation of the country assured the delegation of Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) of taking immediate and solid steps as they cannot afford huge losses and cotton import due to limited resources.

With spinners getting indulged in forward buying amid short supply position, prices recovered on the cotton market on Friday, dealers said. In the ready business, around 5000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 4500-6000 while in the Punjab, prices showed no change at Rs 3100 and Rs 3400. The official spot rate recovered majorly from Rs 100 to Rs 5,650.

Pakistan’s cotton production plunged 34.28 percent to 9.768 million bales in the current season compared to the country’s output of 14.863 million bales in the same period of last season, ending in the mid of April. The drop in output this season is due to the crop’s soft local and international prices forced the farmers, hit by pest attacks and heavy rains, to cut acreage, according to the Pakistan Cotton Ginners’ Association (PCGA).

The prices of domestic cotton over the past several weeks have remained steady though there is a sharp slow down in the cotton turnover this year (August 2015/July 2016) of only about 9.8 million bales (155kgs) against the earlier projection of upto 15 million bales.

As per its fortnightly seed cotton (Kapas/Phutti) arrivals report for the current season (2015/2016) till the 15th of February, 2016, the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) said the ginning factories received 9,687,118 lint equivalent bales.
