Global cotton production set to rise by 10pc during 2017-18 season

The global production trends report released this month, the International Cotton Advisory Committee projected world cotton production to increase by 10%, reaching an estimated 25.4 million tonnes during the 2017/18 cropping season. Production is projected to increase in all other major producing countries including India, China, Pakistan, Brazil, Francophone Africa and Turkey. It forecasts the largest output growth margins to be driven by the USA.

In 2017/18, world cotton production is projected to increase by 8% to 24.9 million tons due entirely to an 8% expansion in world cotton area to 31.7 million hectares, which is below the 20-year average of 32.7 million hectares. The world average yield is forecast at 785 kg/ha. India is expected to remain the world’s largest cotton producer in 2017/18 with output increasing by 6% to 6.1 million tons. After falling by 6% in 2016/17, China’s production is projected to rebound by 7% to 5.2 million tons.

A ‘normal’ monsoon forecast and better price realisation by farmers during the current year likely to see increase in area under cotton by 7 percent during the 2017-18 season, according to the International Cotton Advisory Committee.

Also consumption by textile mills is forecast to recover by 2% due to competitive prices for cotton yarn products, capacity expansion, and the resolution of adverse impact caused by demonetisation.

Chairman of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Forum Ihsan ul Haq stated that Department of Plant Protection (DPP) halted cotton imports from India via the Wagah border crossing amid rising tensions between the two countries. The International Cotton Advisory Committee forecast that the policy of Chinese government auctions to off load its huge cotton reserves, and import limitations, will shrink Chinese cotton stocks by 7% in 2015-16, and a further 10% in 2016-17. Chinese cotton stocks will fall to a five-year low.

The sharp decline in Chinese imports, and falling domestic production, will help draw down stocks even as Chinese demand falls.

According to the US Department of Agriculture forecast China's cotton stocks to fall by 6 percent in 2015-16, to 13.9m tones.

Pakistan despite being the fourth largest producer of cotton has been performing poorly in cotton trade. The cotton consumption is likely to decline by 12 percent this year.
