The Secretary Agriculture said that Punjab government has issued 110,000 smart phones to the farmers equipped with special applications through which extension services are being provided to cotton growers and other crops. The country’s cotton consumption for the 7 months from October 2017 to April 2018 stood at 189 lakh bales with an average of 27 lakh bales per month. Exports are estimated at 61 lakh bales as on April-end.The Statistics Committee of CAI has projected total cotton supply up to April 30, 2018 at 347 lakh bales. This includes market arrivals of 311 lakh bales and imports estimated at 6 lakh bales, the CAI statement said.

One of Africa’s top cotton growers, Burkina Faso, revised its 2017-18 cotton production to 563,000 tons, down from earlier estimate of 650,000 tons.

It had earlier showed a downward projection of its cotton harvest owing to the fact that insufficient rains coupled with pest invasion during sowing period decreased production.

Cotton is the second largest export item for Burkina Faso. It accounts for around 15 per cent revenue to the country’s foreign exchange, and employs about four million people.

Oklahoma is increasingly becoming a national player in cotton production and is projected to climb into fourth place in acres harvested for 2017, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Mississippi is third in forecast acreage and is expected to harvest 95,000 more acres than Oklahoma, down from 140,000 more acres the year before, according to the USDA, but Oklahoma is narrowing the gap, said Harvey Schroeder, executive director of the Oklahoma Cotton Council, which is based in Frederick in southwest Oklahoma.

Pakistan government revises cotton output target by 10.26 percent to 12.60 million bales for the current season of 2017/18 over an earlier target of 14.04 million bales as the country’s biggest crop producer Punjab fell short of targeted cultivation area for the current year as it was missed by 11.4 percent compared with the official target, which would translate into 12 percent drop in production. Water shortage was attributed as a main reason behind low acreage, officials said on Thursday.

The Karachi Cotton Exchange on Thursday recorded slow trading with only four transactions of 1,700 bales from the new crop at a price of Rs6,350 to Rs6,650/maund.

Trading included 1,000 bales from Shahdadpur, 400 bales from Tando Adam, 200 bales from Hyderabad and 100 bales from Burewala.

The spot rates decreased Rs50/maund to Rs6,300/maund (37.324kg) and Rs6,752/40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also dropped to Rs6,435/maund and Rs6,897/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

Ex-Karachi rates also stood firm at Rs6,835/maund and Rs7,325/40kg after an addition of Rs135 and Rs145 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

At the beginning of current season, the Federal Committee on Agriculture had projected that farmers would plant cotton over an area of 3.009 million hectares and produce 14.101 million bales. But Pakistan’s cotton produce is expected to remain lower at around 10.542 million bales in the current season because farmers under-sowed the cash crop on the fears of further drop in prices.
