Malawi’s cotton production has gone down from 100,000 metric tons in 2012 to around 15,000 in 2017, to revive the industry which it says is at the verge of collapsing, the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) in Malawi has urged the government to make investment of US$4.8 million (about K3.5 billion) into cotton farming, said AICC Chief Executive Officer Felix Lombe on Wednesday in Mzuzu.

US cotton acreage to drop 15 pct this year over weak market price

The National Cotton Council (NCC) expects cotton farming in the world's biggest exporter to fall to 9.4 million acres in 2015. That would be the smallest cotton acreage since 2009, according to U.S. government data.

U.S. cotton farmers are expected to reduce acreage by nearly 15 percent this year as weak market prices force them to switch to other crops.

The NCC survey, widely watched as one of the earliest indicators of the next season's production, is based on a questionnaire mailed in mid-December to producers across the 17-state cotton belt.

The 12th international textile conference organized by Textile Association of India (TAI) kicked off today in Nagpur. The event will be held for two days, January 17 and 18. Uzbekistan, the Central Asian country has started focusing on production of finished textile goods rather than of raw cotton. It is slowly trying to transition away from its traditional strength of cotton farming going on for generations. As, cotton farming requires a huge amount of water, a great difficulty for dry Uzbekistan.

Though the Uzbek economic picture has evolved, cotton remains key crop. Last year, the area planted under crops in Uzbekistan totalled almost 3.6m ha for which cotton occupied 1.3m ha, about 36%.

Kenyan textile industry was flourishing in the 1980s before the influx of ‘mitumba’ into the country.
