Cotton production in Pakistan showing 7 pc increase in volume

The Pakistan's cotton arrival trends during last fortnight, showing above the market expectations, at least 422,738 cotton bales of 160 kilograms each reached ginning factories during the last fortnight, as per the industry data showed on Wednesday.

According to a consolidated statement of cotton arrivals in factories around the country till January 1, total cotton arrival at ginning stage has so far reached at 11.108 million bales, a seven percent increase in volume compared with the same period a year ago.

The Pakistan Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) during its second meeting held here on Thursday with Federal Secretary Ministry of Commerce and Textile Industry Hassan Iqbal in the chair, reviewed the crop output in the country for the current season and estimated cotton crop production volume at 12.60 million bales for the crop season 2017-18.

The meeting was informed that cotton crop output was remained same as forecast in the first review meeting and total production was estimated at 12.60 million bales during the current season.

At the beginning of current season, the Federal Committee on Agriculture had projected that farmers would plant cotton over an area of 3.009 million hectares and produce 14.101 million bales. But Pakistan’s cotton produce is expected to remain lower at around 10.542 million bales in the current season because farmers under-sowed the cash crop on the fears of further drop in prices.

Pakistan managed to produce only 9.48 million bales of cotton in the current season against 14.125 million bales during the same period of last year, decline by 33 percent due to abnormal weather, seed quality, pests and disease and low prices which have negatively affected cotton production.

The sub-committee of National Assembly Standing Committee on Textile Industry had recommended fixing the minimum guaranteed price of cotton at Rs 2700 per 40 kg for the financial year 2015-16 after considering the cost of production. Delay from government to decide on cotton intervention price for the current season is likely to leave growers without due benefits. As Cotton growers in Pakistan are not given any subsidy, they have to compete with the prices of subsidized cotton.

Pakistan is implausible to achieve cotton target of 15.49 million bales set for the current season (2015-16) against the revised target of 13.48 million bales for (2014-15 from 7.7 million acres as it has missed about ten percent of cotton sowing target due to unprecedented rains during the early cotton sowing season, official sources revealed.
