Cotton is perhaps the most recognized fiber in the apparel market, and is used, either in its pure form or blended with other materials, to make much of the world’s clothing.

The soft, fluffy staple fiber grows in a boll around the seeds of a cotton plant, and the fiber is nearly pure cellulose, the most abundant organic polymer on Earth. Fibers from the cotton plant are spun into yarn or thread and made into fiber, yielding soft, breathable textiles. Cotton is the most widely used natural fiber in clothing today.

Cotton is in the grips of the bears, and fresh U.S. supply forecasts coming this week will probably keep it there.

Prices tumbled to a three-year low Tuesday amid the outlook for big supplies at a time when consumption growth is slowing and American exports are hurting. Hedge funds are holding their biggest-ever bet that the declines will continue. Meanwhile, traders and analysts expect that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will raise its outlook for domestic stockpiles, with the hoard forecast to reach a 12-year high.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue has announced the appointment of 13 members, 13 alternate members and one advisor to serve on the Cotton Board. The following appointees will serve three-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2020.

Perdue said that the Cotton Board carries out research and promotional activities that strengthen the competitive position of cotton by expanding demand in domestic and foreign markets, improving fibre quality, and lowering costs of production. These appointees represent a cross section of the industry, and the cotton industry will be well served by their work.

Oklahoma is increasingly becoming a national player in cotton production and is projected to climb into fourth place in acres harvested for 2017, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Mississippi is third in forecast acreage and is expected to harvest 95,000 more acres than Oklahoma, down from 140,000 more acres the year before, according to the USDA, but Oklahoma is narrowing the gap, said Harvey Schroeder, executive director of the Oklahoma Cotton Council, which is based in Frederick in southwest Oklahoma.

Turkey's cotton industry have started investing in new technology as the result its domestic cotton consumption is expected to rise to 6.89m 480 pound bales, a ten year high next year and up 115,000 bales from the previous session, the USDA’s official said.

According to the US Department of Agriculture's bureau in Ankara, Turkish textile exports has raised due to increased sales in Europe, as well as thawing relations with Russia.

Political instability among many of Turkey's neighbours is forcing the industry to focus on competing in the European markets.

In International market cotton was traded at 77 cents from 62 cents three months ago, a rise by 24.19 percent due to a fall in supplies by China and India, two major cotton producers and consumers. Six months ago the price was below 60 cents, according to industry insiders.

According to Hissam Khandker, director of Delcot Enterprise Ltd, a leading cotton importer of Bangladesh, it is a short-term hike. He hopes that the price will start declining from November when new crops will be available in markets.
